Carsick Cars at YGYS (愚公移山)

For those who can't wait for their latest album "You Can Listen You Can Talk" release show on the 26th, check this out. The surprise openers for Yann Tiersen's concert at YuGongYiShan on June 19th, they perform old favorites "Zhongnanhai" and "Rock n' Roll Hero" as well as songs from their upcoming album. I know the recording quality could be better. Believe me, I'm working on it.

Yann Tiersen's Dust Lane Tour Show YGYS (9/19/09)

You're probably asking yourself, "Who the hell is Yann Tiersen?" Well, if you liked the scores from the films "Amelie" and "Goodbye Lenin," he's the guy who composed them. (He plays the song from "Amelie" in the Encore track.) On tour in China with his band, Tiersen experiments with rock n' roll (Think: The Pixies only French and not as good). Not stellar as a rock front man, he really blew me away when he picked up his violin. And if you want to hear me tell a group of obnoxious French guys to shut-up, check out the "Encore" track.

Jianghu Jiuba

耳光 (Er Guang) at Jianghu (江湖酒吧) 6/20/09

The band name in Chinese means "slap in the face." Pretty well-known and respected both in the local Beijing scene, as well as in greater China, 耳光 plays some impressively soulful rock tunes. Their harmonica player (equipped with a case full of shiny harmonicas) is a virtuoso and their zither player would also pick up a ukelele from time to time. My only qualm was with the singer, whose vocal stylings never diverged from chanting (which is actually quite common in Chinese rock).
